Medical Malpractice - $6.2 Million Settlement
This case involved a 58 year old man that underwent brain surgery for a benign cyst. Despite the availability of advanced neurosurgery navigation technology which would have allowed the surgeon to accurately visualize the brain and his surgical instruments, the doctor performed this delicate brain surgery without the aid of such equipment. For weeks after the surgery, our client remained in a coma. We alleged that the surgeon failed to recognize important anatomical landmarks in the brain and became “lost”, negligently causing permanent injury to portions of our client’s brain that were otherwise healthy.
Numerous experts in the field of brain surgery were enlisted to support these allegations and our attorneys helped the family arrange a transfer to a different hospital to pursue better care. Today, our client still requires 24 hour supervision due to his resulting cognitive disabilities. In a lawsuit filed against the surgeon and a Rockford area hospital, a settlement in the amount of $6,200,000 was secured on behalf of our client and his wife. This settlement represents one of the largest settlements of this kind ever in Winnebago County.
