Different Types of Chicago Spinal Injuries

By admin on March 21, 2016

The human body is a miraculous creation. But while our bodies are capable of taking a great deal of punishment and are resilient for the most part, they also have their vulnerabilities.  We have all heard of circumstances where a person has walked away unharmed and unscathed from seemed like a significant accident. Yet in other situations, even the slightest bit of force may instead cause serious, lasting and permanent damage. Anyone who has suffered a back injury knows this to be true.

Incomplete and Complete Spinal Cord Injuries

Depending on the severity of the accident and the location along the spine of such a back injury, a person can end up with anything from slight back pain to complete paralysis. Generally speaking, serious spinal injuries are broken out into “complete and “incomplete” paralysis classifications.

Most damage to the spine results in incomplete injury; meaning that there is some loss of feeling or numbness below a certain part of the body. But, if the damage is severe enough, complete paralysis may occur below a certain point on the spine. In particular, any injury to the upper spine near a person’s neck – or C region – can lead to paraplegia or quadriplegia. Complete paralysis injuries cause the loss of all feeling below where the injury happened.

Common Spinal Cord Injury Causes

Any injury to a person’s back can cause a spinal cord injury. Here are the most common causes of spinal cord injuries we’ve seen:

  • Car accidents
  • Truck accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Slip, trip, and fall accidents
  • Swimming pool accidents
  • Medical malpractice
  • Birth injuries
